Frequently Asked Questions

How does the split-core design of HTFS 800-P work?

The HTFS 800-P features a hinged, split-core design that allows the sensor to open and clamp around an existing conductor without disconnection. The core consists of two halves with precision-mated surfaces. When closed and secured with the locking mechanism, the core forms a continuous magnetic path around the conductor. Hall effect sensors embedded in the core measure the magnetic field generated by the current. The split-core design maintains measurement accuracy comparable to solid-core sensors (0.5% for HTFS) while enabling retrofit installation. Proper closure of the core is essential - ensure the locking mechanism is fully engaged and core faces are clean for accurate measurement.

Use HTFS series when you cannot disconnect the conductor for installation. Ensure the core is fully closed and locked for accurate measurement. Clean the mating surfaces if the sensor has been opened previously.

What conductor sizes fit in the HTFS 800-P aperture?

The HTFS 800-P has a 52mm (2.05 inch) diameter aperture, accommodating: 1) Single copper busbars up to approximately 50mm x 10mm (2000A capacity busbar); 2) Multiple parallel cables - typically up to 4 x 240mm² cables; 3) Large single cables with insulation - up to 400mm² or larger depending on insulation thickness; 4) Busbar stacks and irregular shapes within the circular opening. When sizing, consider not just conductor dimensions but also insulation, cable ties, and bending radius. The conductor should be centered in the aperture for best accuracy. For conductors smaller than the aperture, centering is still important - off-center mounting can introduce 1-2% error. If the conductor is significantly smaller than the aperture, consider using a smaller HTFS model for better accuracy.

Measure your conductor dimensions including insulation before selecting. Ensure the conductor fits comfortably within the 52mm aperture with room for centering. For multiple cables, bundle them together and center the bundle in the aperture.

Can HTFS 800-P measure both AC and DC currents?

Yes, the HTFS 800-P uses Hall effect technology which responds to the magnetic field generated by current flow, regardless of whether it's AC or DC. This makes it suitable for: 1) DC systems - Battery monitoring, DC distribution, solar DC circuits; 2) AC systems - Standard 50/60Hz power distribution; 3) Mixed systems - UPS battery charging/discharging, rectifier circuits; 4) Distorted waveforms - VFD output currents, harmonic-rich loads. The 4-20mA output provides a DC signal proportional to the absolute value of current (direction-insensitive for this model). The 500ms response time is suitable for monitoring average current but too slow to track rapid AC waveform variations. For AC waveform analysis, consider instantaneous output sensors.

HTFS 800-P measures both AC and DC, but the 500ms response time means it's suitable for monitoring average current, not for capturing fast AC transients. Use it for DC monitoring, average AC monitoring, or slow-changing currents.
