HGSEMI Interface and Driver ICs

RS-232 is a point-to-point serial interface using single-ended signaling with typical range of 15-50 feet and data rates up to 115kbps. It uses voltage levels of ±3V to ±15V for logic states. RS-485 is a multi-drop differential interface supporting up to 32 nodes (256 with repeaters) over distances up to 4000 feet at lower data rates. RS-485 uses differential signaling with 2V minimum differential voltage, providing better noise immunity. RS-232 is simpler for short-distance point-to-point, while RS-485 is better for long-distance multi-node industrial networks.

RS-485 maximum cable length depends on data rate and cable characteristics. At 100kbps, maximum length is approximately 4000 feet (1200m). At 1Mbps, maximum drops to about 400 feet (120m). At 10Mbps, maximum is about 50 feet (15m). The relationship is inverse - doubling data rate halves maximum length. Cable quality matters - use twisted pair cable with 120Ω characteristic impedance. Termination resistors (120Ω) at both ends are essential for high data rates. Stub length should be minimized (< 1 foot) to prevent reflections.

Fail-safe operation ensures the receiver outputs a defined logic state (typically high) when the bus is idle or open-circuit. Without fail-safe, noise can cause false triggering when no driver is active. True fail-safe receivers have internal biasing that sets the threshold to -50mV to -200mV instead of the standard ±200mV. This ensures a logic high when differential voltage is zero or slightly negative. Alternatively, external fail-safe can be implemented with termination resistors and bias resistors at one end of the bus.

ESD protection requirements depend on application environment. Standard commercial applications: ±2kV contact, ±4kV air discharge (IEC 61000-4-2 Level 2). Industrial applications: ±4kV contact, ±8kV air (Level 3). Harsh industrial or handheld devices: ±8kV contact, ±15kV air (Level 4). HGSEMI interface ICs offer ±15kV ESD protection on bus pins, suitable for most applications. Additional external protection (TVS diodes) may be needed for extreme environments or lightning protection.

Interfacing between 3.3V and 5V logic requires level translation. Options include: Dedicated level shifter ICs (uni-directional or bi-directional) - cleanest solution

Open-drain with pull-up - works for slow signals

Series resistor - simple but not ideal

and MOSFET level shifter - discrete solution for I2C. For 5V to 3.3V: 5V output can directly drive 3.3V input if 3.3V input is 5V tolerant. For 3.3V to 5V: Level shifter needed as 3.3V may not meet 5V CMOS input high threshold (3.5V min). HGSEMI offers various level shifters for different applications.
