Faratronic Film Capacitors

Faratronic uses polypropylene (PP) film for high-frequency and pulse applications due to its low losses, and polyester (PET) film for general-purpose applications. PP film is preferred for DC-Link and snubber applications.

For high-frequency switching applications, choose PP film capacitors. For cost-sensitive general applications, PET film may be suitable.

Self-healing is a property where the capacitor can clear small dielectric breakdowns by vaporizing the thin metallization around the fault point, isolating the defect and allowing continued operation. This prevents catastrophic failure.

Self-healing makes metallized film capacitors highly reliable for critical applications. Specify metallized film for applications requiring high reliability.

DC-Link capacitance depends on allowable voltage ripple, load current, and switching frequency. Typical formula: C = I / (2 × f × ΔV), where I is current, f is frequency, and ΔV is allowable voltage ripple.

Polypropylene film capacitors have a negative temperature coefficient of approximately -200 ppm/°C. Capacitance decreases slightly with increasing temperature but remains very stable compared to other capacitor types.

For applications requiring tight capacitance tolerance over temperature, PP film capacitors are an excellent choice due to their stability.
