Chemi-Con Automotive Capacitor Application Guide

Automotive applications demand capacitors with enhanced reliability, extended temperature range, and AEC-Q200 qualification. This guide covers selection and application of Chemi-Con automotive capacitors.

AEC-Q200 Qualification

AEC-Q200 is the global standard for automotive passive components. It defines rigorous testing requirements:

Environmental Testing:

  • Temperature cycling: -40°C to +150°C
  • High temperature storage: 1000 hours at 150°C
  • Temperature humidity bias: 1000 hours at 85°C/85% RH

Mechanical Testing:

  • Vibration: 5-2000Hz, 20G peak
  • Mechanical shock: 100G half-sine
  • Board flex: 2mm minimum

Electrical Testing:

  • Electrostatic discharge: 2kV minimum
  • Electrical characterization: Full temp range
  • Endurance: 2000 hours at rated temp/voltage

Automotive Series

AKM Series: AEC-Q200 qualified radial lead capacitors. Temperature ratings up to 150°C. Enhanced construction for vibration resistance.

AKN Series: High-temperature automotive capacitors rated for 150°C continuous operation. For under-hood applications.

AKS Series: Snap-in automotive capacitors for powertrain applications. High ripple current and large capacitance.

Design Requirements

Voltage Derating:

  • 12V systems: Use 35V or 50V capacitors (50% derating)
  • 48V systems: Use 100V or 160V capacitors
  • Load dump protection: Must survive 100V transients

Temperature Considerations:

  • Passenger compartment: 105°C rating sufficient
  • Engine compartment: 125°C or 150°C rating required
  • Under-hood: 150°C rating with thermal management

Reliability Requirements:

  • 15-year vehicle lifetime
  • Zero defect quality level
  • Full traceability required
  • PPAP documentation
