Chemi-Con Capacitor Selection Guide

Selecting the right aluminum electrolytic capacitor requires understanding your application requirements and matching them to the appropriate Chemi-Con series.

Understanding Capacitor Specifications

Capacitance: The amount of charge a capacitor can store, measured in microfarads (uF). Select based on energy storage or filtering requirements.

Voltage Rating: The maximum DC voltage the capacitor can withstand. Always apply 20-50% derating for reliable operation.

Ripple Current: The maximum AC current the capacitor can handle without excessive heating. Higher ripple current capability means better performance in switching applications.

Temperature Rating: The maximum operating temperature. 105°C is standard for industrial, 125°C or 150°C for automotive.

Lifetime: Rated operating hours at maximum temperature. Actual lifetime extends significantly with lower operating temperatures.

Chemi-Con Series Overview

KMQ Series: Premium radial lead capacitors with highest reliability and longest lifetime. Japan manufacturing. Ideal for mission-critical industrial and automotive applications.

KZE Series: General-purpose radial lead capacitors offering excellent value. Suitable for consumer electronics and cost-sensitive industrial applications.

KY Series: High-temperature radial lead capacitors rated for 130°C operation. Perfect for applications with limited cooling.

LXS Series: Snap-in capacitors for high-power applications. High ripple current and large capacitance values for industrial drives and power supplies.

ALS Series: Screw terminal capacitors for very high power applications. Large can sizes up to 680,000uF for renewable energy and industrial systems.

AKM Series: AEC-Q200 qualified automotive capacitors. Extended temperature range and enhanced reliability for vehicle applications.

Selection Process

  • Determine Capacitance: Calculate based on energy storage needs or filtering requirements
  • Select Voltage Rating: Use 1.2-1.5x maximum operating voltage
  • Evaluate Ripple Current: Calculate RMS ripple and select capacitor with adequate margin
  • Consider Temperature: Determine maximum ambient and calculate self-heating
  • Assess Lifetime: Use Arrhenius equation to predict actual lifetime
  • Choose Package: Radial for low power, snap-in for medium, screw terminal for high power
  • Application Guidelines

Switching Power Supplies: Use KMQ or KZE series with adequate ripple current rating. Consider parallel capacitors for high current.

Motor Drives: LXS snap-in series for DC bus applications. High ripple current capability essential.

Automotive Electronics: AKM series with AEC-Q200 qualification. 50% voltage derating recommended.

Renewable Energy: ALS screw terminal series for large energy storage. Long lifetime critical.

LED Lighting: KY high-temperature series for compact fixtures with limited airflow.
