FAE Expert Insights
"The AU7050 is our long-range workhorse. The +27dBm PA gives serious range - I've seen 3-5km in rural deployments. The integrated PA saves the cost and complexity of external amplifiers. Sensitivity is excellent at -120dBm. One consideration: the higher TX power means higher current consumption (90mA at +27dBm), so plan your power budget accordingly. For battery applications, you can reduce power to +20dBm and still get great range. The frequency hopping works well for interference rejection. A great choice when range is critical."

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the actual range?
Range depends on environment: (1) Open field/rural - 3-5km with +27dBm; (2) Suburban - 1-2km; (3) Urban - 500m-1km; (4) Indoor - 100-200m through walls. Lower data rates provide longer range. Use lower TX power (+20dBm) for battery savings with reduced range.
Expect 3-5km rural, 1-2km suburban; use +27dBm for max range.
How much current does the PA draw?
Current consumption at different TX power levels: (1) +27dBm - 90mA; (2) +20dBm - 45mA; (3) +14dBm - 25mA; (4) RX mode - 12mA; (5) Sleep mode - 0.5μA. Plan your power supply and battery capacity accordingly. For battery applications, consider duty cycling or using lower TX power.
90mA at +27dBm; 45mA at +20dBm; plan power budget accordingly.
What modulation schemes are supported?
The AU7050 supports multiple modulation schemes for different applications: (1) FSK (Frequency Shift Keying) - robust, good for general purpose; (2) GFSK (Gaussian FSK) - spectrally efficient, used in Bluetooth and many proprietary protocols; (3) MSK (Minimum Shift Keying) - constant envelope, good for power amplifiers; (4) OOK (On-Off Keying) - simplest, lowest power but less robust. FSK and GFSK are most commonly used. The modulation index is programmable to optimize for bandwidth efficiency or sensitivity. Select modulation based on your range, data rate, and interference environment requirements.
FSK/GFSK for most applications; OOK for lowest power; MSK for PA efficiency.
How do I select the frequency band?
The AU7050 supports 433MHz, 868MHz, and 915MHz ISM bands: (1) 433MHz - longest range, best penetration, most crowded in Europe; (2) 868MHz - good range, less crowded in Europe, regional restrictions apply; (3) 915MHz - good range, primarily for Americas, different regulations. Lower frequencies provide longer range and better penetration through obstacles. Consider: (1) Regional regulations - check local frequency allocations; (2) Range requirements - use 433MHz for maximum range; (3) Interference - check local spectrum usage; (4) Antenna size - lower frequencies require larger antennas.
Use 433MHz for max range; check regional regulations for 868/915MHz.
What is the maximum data rate?
The AU7050 supports data rates from 0.5kbps to 300kbps: (1) 0.5-2.4kbps - maximum range, best sensitivity (-120dBm); (2) 4.8-9.6kbps - typical IoT rates, good balance; (3) 19.2-38.4kbps - higher throughput, reduced range; (4) 100-300kbps - maximum speed, significantly reduced range. Lower data rates provide better sensitivity and longer range due to narrower bandwidth. For long-range applications, use the lowest data rate that meets your throughput requirements. The data rate is programmable via SPI for flexible system design.
Use lowest data rate for maximum range; up to 300kbps for high speed.
