Use for: low to medium power applications, space-constrained designs, cost-sensitive products. Pre-drivers provide control logic and gate drive for external MOSFETs: Advantages - flexible power scaling, custom MOSFET selection, better thermal management, higher power capability (> 1kW possible). Limitations - requires external MOSFETs and more design effort, larger PCB area. Use for: high-power applications, custom performance requirements, thermal-critical designs. Allegro's AMT49105 is an integrated driver up to 200W, while A4931 is a pre-driver for external MOSFET configurations supporting higher power.

Use integrated drivers for < 500W; pre-drivers with external MOSFETs for > 500W or custom requirements.

Motor driver sizing involves several key parameters: Continuous current - driver must handle motor's rated current continuously. Include 50% margin: I_driver = 1.5 × I_motor_rated. Peak current - driver must handle startup and overload currents. Motors can draw 3-5× rated current during startup. Voltage rating - driver supply voltage must exceed motor voltage with margin. Use V_driver = 1.2 × V_motor. Power dissipation - calculate driver losses: P = I² × Rds(on) for integrated drivers. Ensure thermal design can handle dissipation.
