Successive approximation (SAR) ADCs from AcelaMicro offer high sampling rates with moderate resolution (12-16 bits), making them ideal for multiplexed sensor systems and control applications. SAR ADCs provide low latency and deterministic conversion times. Sigma-delta ADCs provide higher resolution (16-24 bits) at lower sampling rates, perfect for precision measurement applications like weigh scales and temperature sensors. They use oversampling and noise shaping to achieve excellent dynamic range. Choose SAR for speed, sigma-delta for precision.

For multi-channel sensor monitoring and control loops, choose SAR ADCs. For high-precision single-channel measurements, select sigma-delta ADCs.

Resolution requirements depend on your measurement accuracy needs. For temperature measurement with 0.1°C accuracy, you typically need 16+ bits. For weigh scales requiring 1:10,000 resolution, 24 bits is recommended. For battery monitoring with 1mV accuracy on a 5V scale, 12-14 bits is sufficient. For audio applications, 16-24 bits provides good dynamic range. Consider that effective resolution (ENOB) is typically 2-4 bits less than the ADC's nominal resolution due to noise. AcelaMicro's ACM1604 provides 16-bit resolution with approximately 14.5 ENOB at full speed, while the ACM2420 provides 24-bit resolution with 20 ENOB at low data rates.

Single-ended inputs measure voltage between the input pin and ground, offering simpler design but susceptible to ground noise. Differential inputs measure the voltage difference between two input pins, rejecting common-mode noise that appears equally on both inputs. Differential inputs provide better noise immunity and are recommended for industrial environments, long cable runs, and small signal measurements. AcelaMicro ADCs support standard serial interfaces for easy microcontroller integration. The ACM1604 uses SPI interface with CS, SCLK, DIN, and DOUT pins, supporting clock rates up to 20 MHz.
