Photovoltaic Fuse Selection Guide
Introduction
Photovoltaic systems require gPV-classified fuses per IEC 60269-6. These fuses are specifically designed for DC solar applications with full-range protection and high-voltage ratings up to 1500VDC.
gPV Classification
gPV (general Purpose Photovoltaic) fuses are tested for DC operation up to 1500V and can safely interrupt low overcurrents typical of PV faults. Standard gG fuses are not suitable for PV applications.
String Fuse Sizing
Fuse rating = 1.5x to 1.8x Isc (short-circuit current). Never size based on Imp (operating current). Example: 10A Isc requires 15A-18A fuse, select 15A or 20A standard rating.
Voltage Rating
1000VDC for residential and small commercial systems. 1500VDC for utility-scale and large commercial to reduce DC wiring costs. Select rating above maximum system open-circuit voltage.
