MCP2551
High-speed CAN transceiver for CAN 2.0B networks up to 1Mbps, with slope control, thermal shutdown, and protection features.
Product Overview
Description
The MCP2551 is a high-speed CAN transceiver designed for use in CAN 2.0B networks operating at speeds up to 1Mbps. It interfaces between the CAN controller (like MCP2515) and the physical CAN bus.
The device features differential transmit and receive capability, slope control for reduced EMI, and protection features including thermal shutdown and short-circuit protection on the CAN bus pins.
The MCP2551 supports up to 112 nodes on the CAN bus and provides excellent EMC performance for harsh industrial and automotive environments.

FAE Expert Insights
"The MCP2551 is the classic CAN transceiver that pairs perfectly with the MCP2515 controller. The slope control feature is important for reducing EMI in automotive applications. I've used this combination in dozens of CAN bus projects from automotive diagnostics to industrial control systems. The protection features make it robust for harsh environments."

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the purpose of the Rs pin on MCP2551?
The Rs (slope control) pin controls the slew rate of the CAN output signals. Connect Rs to ground for high-speed mode (fastest edges, highest speed). Connect a resistor (10kΩ to 100kΩ) from Rs to ground for slope control mode, which slows the edges to reduce EMI. For high-speed CAN (500k-1M), use high-speed mode. For lower speeds or reduced EMI, use slope control.
Connect Rs to ground for high-speed; use 10-100kΩ resistor for slope control/EMI reduction.
