LP4060
Complete charger for 2-cell Li-ion/Li-Polymer batteries with 8.4V charge voltage and 1A capability
Product Overview
Description
The LP4060 is a complete constant-current/constant-voltage linear charger for 2-cell Li-ion and Li-Polymer battery packs. It provides a regulated 8.4V charge voltage (4.2V per cell) with ±1% accuracy, ensuring safe and complete charging.
The charger operates from a 9V to 12V input and can deliver up to 1A charge current. It automatically implements the standard Li-ion charging profile: trickle charge for deeply discharged batteries, fast charge constant current, and constant voltage with automatic termination when current drops to C/10.
The LP4060 includes safety features such as thermal regulation, reverse current protection, and charge status indication. It monitors both cells for balanced charging. Available in an exposed-pad SOIC-8 package for thermal management, it is ideal for portable equipment, power tools, and medical devices using 2-cell battery packs.

FAE Expert Insights
"The LP4060 is a reliable solution for charging 2-cell Li-ion packs. The 8.4V charge voltage with ±1% accuracy ensures both cells receive proper charging without overvoltage. I've used this charger in power tool applications and portable medical equipment. The 1A charge current capability allows reasonably fast charging of 2000-3000mAh packs. The cell balancing monitoring is a key feature - it helps prevent one cell from overcharging while the other is undercharged. One implementation tip: the exposed pad must be soldered to a large copper area for thermal management. At 1A charge current from 12V input, the power dissipation is (12V - 8.4V) × 1A = 3.6W, which requires good heat sinking. I've seen designs fail from inadequate thermal management. The charge status pin is useful for driving an LED or connecting to a microcontroller. Overall, a solid 2-cell charger solution."

Frequently Asked Questions
Does LP4060 balance the two cells?
The LP4060 monitors both cells during charging to detect imbalance conditions. While it doesn't actively balance the cells (which would require additional circuitry), it can indicate when cell imbalance is detected. For applications requiring active balancing, external balancing circuits should be added.
Monitors cell balance; add external active balancing if required for your application.
