FAE Expert Insights
"HG358 is my go-to recommendation for cost-sensitive analog designs. It offers excellent value with performance comparable to industry standard parts at a lower price point. The wide supply range makes it versatile for both 3.3V/5V digital systems and ±12V/±15V analog systems. The rail-to-rail output is a nice feature for maximizing dynamic range in low-voltage applications. I've used this op-amp in numerous industrial sensor designs with excellent results. For best performance, I recommend adding 0.1μF bypass capacitors close to each supply pin. The dual configuration is convenient for differential amplifiers and active filters."

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between HG358 and LM358?
HG358 is pin-compatible and functionally equivalent to LM358, with some performance improvements. Key differences: HG358 has slightly better slew rate (0.6V/μs vs 0.5V/μs); HG358 features rail-to-rail output while LM358 has limited output swing; Both have similar GBW (1MHz) and offset voltage (2mV); and HG358 is typically more cost-effective. HG358 can directly replace LM358 in most applications while providing better output swing and potentially lower cost.
HG358 is an excellent drop-in replacement for LM358 with better performance and lower cost. Contact our FAE team for replacement verification.
Can HG358 operate with single supply?
Yes, HG358 is designed for both single-supply and dual-supply operation. The input common-mode range extends to ground (GND - 0.1V), making it suitable for single-supply applications with ground-referenced inputs. The rail-to-rail output allows maximum output swing from a single supply. For single-supply operation, typical configurations use 5V or 3.3V supply. The wide supply range (3V to 32V) provides flexibility for various system voltages. When using single supply, remember to bias inputs appropriately for AC-coupled applications.
HG358 works well in single-supply applications. Our FAE team can provide single-supply circuit design guidance.
What is the noise performance of HG358?
HG358 has input voltage noise density of 40nV/√Hz at 1kHz, which is typical for general purpose op-amps. For a 10kHz bandwidth, total noise is approximately 4μV RMS. The current noise is negligible due to the CMOS input stage (45nA bias current). This noise level is adequate for most sensor and signal conditioning applications. For comparison, precision op-amps may have lower noise (3-10nV/√Hz) but at higher cost and power consumption. In most industrial applications, the 40nV/√Hz noise of HG358 does not limit system performance.
For most applications, HG358 noise is adequate. For very low noise requirements, contact our FAE team for precision op-amp recommendations.
How do I compensate HG358 for capacitive loads?
HG358 can drive capacitive loads up to 100pF without stability issues. For larger capacitive loads (up to 1000pF), an isolation resistor of 20-50Ω in series with the output prevents ringing and oscillation. The resistor isolates the capacitive load from the op-amp output, creating a zero that compensates the pole formed by the load capacitance. For driving large capacitive loads (>1000pF), consider using an output buffer stage or reducing the feedback resistor values. In most applications, 100pF drive capability is sufficient for cable capacitance and ADC input sampling.
Use isolation resistor for capacitive loads >100pF. Contact our FAE team for capacitive load driving solutions.
Can HG358 be used as a comparator?
While HG358 can be used as a comparator in non-critical applications, it's not optimized for this function. Op-amps used as comparators have limitations: Slow response time due to internal compensation; Output saturation causes long recovery times; and No internal hysteresis, requiring external positive feedback. For low-speed applications (<1kHz) where speed is not critical, HG358 can work as a comparator. For faster or more critical applications, use a dedicated comparator like HG339 which offers faster response, lower power, and internal hysteresis options.
Use HG358 as comparator only for low-speed non-critical applications. For better performance, use dedicated comparators. Contact our FAE team for comparator recommendations.
