Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is AEC-Q100 and why is it important?
AEC-Q100 is the automotive industry standard for integrated circuit qualification. It defines stress tests including HTOL, temperature cycling, and ESD testing. Grade 1 (-40°C to +125°C) is required for under-hood applications. AEC-Q100 ensures components can withstand harsh automotive environments and provides traceability for safety-critical applications.
2. How many photocouplers are needed for a BMS?
A typical EV BMS uses 12-24 photocouplers: Cell monitoring (1 per 12-16 cells), Contactor control (2-4), Current sensing (1-2), Isolation monitoring (1-2), Communication (2-4). For a 96-cell pack: ~16 cell monitoring + 4 contactor + 2 current + 2 communication = 24 total.
3. What is PPAP and when is it required?
PPAP (Production Part Approval Process) is required for automotive production parts. Level 3 includes design records, test results, process capability studies, and other documentation. It ensures supplier components meet all customer requirements. Cosmo provides full PPAP Level 3 documentation for automotive customers.
4. What isolation is required for EV battery systems?
EV battery systems require reinforced insulation: 5000V isolation voltage, 8-14mm creepage/clearance, >10MΩ isolation resistance, compliance with ISO 6469 and UL 2580. Use 5000V photocouplers (K2010 series) for all high-voltage to low-voltage interfaces.
5. What is the difference between Grade 1 and Grade 2?
AEC-Q100 Grade 1: -40°C to +125°C, required for under-hood and battery applications. Grade 2: -40°C to +105°C, suitable for passenger compartment. Grade 1 provides wider operating range and higher reliability margins. Always specify Grade 1 for safety-critical and high-temperature applications.
